Guten Tag and welcome to Germany’s medieval paradise….
Rothenburg ob der Tauber – once you get your head around how to pronounce the name of the town, you will bask in its cobblestoned glory. We promise!
I always knew that Rothenburg was one of Germany’s gems but for some reason, I’d never found a reason to go. That was until I had an Australian friend visiting me. Whenever I have friends over, I’m always keen to get exploring and over the three days with her, we took my car and drove to the Felsenmeer Forest, Heidelberg and then Rothenburg. (For those following this blog, a Heidelberg post is coming very soon!)
Basically we drove from Frankfurt straight to Rothenburg. It was an easy drive, you just stick to one highway the entire way. The town is very sleepy, quiet and you will have no worries driving in. Trust me, I’m Germany’s best worst driver.
There are small car parks in the very centre of town, as in *within* the old town walls. I wouldn’t recommend doing this. Why? Well it’s full of narrow streets and cobblestones – perfect for pedestrians really.
There are 5 carparks or Parkhaus (in German) and you need to keep your eyes peeled for P1, P2, P3, P4 or P5. They are all well signed.
I think we found P5 quite easily, paid our fee (not much, it’s Germany so mega cheap) and off we went! It’s impossible to get lost here – why? Well the entire old town is surrounded by a beautiful, medieval town fortress or wall and once you’re in, you’re in.
The funny thing is the weather was beautiful the entire way to Rothenburg and the minute we stepped foot inside, it began to rain. But fear not pedestrians! No need for an umbrella. Rothenburg’s town wall is complete with an internal tunnel and you can walk 100% around and above the town, stopping as you please to take photos. Basically have a look at the photos below and you’ll see what I mean.

If you come to Rothenburg, the classic local thing to eat is the Schneebaellchen.
Hidden tip, try it but it wasn’t too good! (The balls are made of dough and they sit there for 6 weeks until sold – so they kind of tasted stale 🙁 Sorry Rothenburg!)

Town square. If you can, climb to the top of the Rathaus Tower. We couldn’t get in as it closed at 5PM and we arrived at 5:15PM so the typical German ‘Punktlichkeit’ got the better of us. This was the highest peak we could reach.
