Bollants Spa Hotel Frankfurt: A Luxury Getaway

Bollants - A luxury getaway close to Frankfurt

Frankfurt might be one of Germany’s hardest working cities. Some of my friends go into the office on weekends and others come home from work so late that you wouldn’t believe it. Frankfurt seems to be a world away from this quiet, paradise-like oasis. A ‘world away’ which is the equivalent of 90 minutes. If you aren’t already desperate to get out of the Frankfurt city rush for a couple of days, you certainly will be soon. I had the absolute pleasure of staying two nights here at Bollants Spa Hotel, Frankfurt, and I have a feeling you will too. Their principle of relaxation tells you that they mean business – it won’t take long for you to unwind.

After check in, you’ll be invited to have a glass of prosecco in the lobby. It was a lovely touch after such a long journey. (Insert wink)

My husband and I sat on the couch and played a board game while we enjoyed our day drinking. Shortly after, we checked into our room: the Halenberg mini suite. Bollants is a really large property and I guess that (even though I haven’t seen each room), the sizes are all quite large. Another lovely reason to do this getaway is that your room is likely to have a view of the garden or of the mountain ranges in the distance. That’s one thing I love about hotels which are hidden away in the countryside.

You know there’s not much worse than checking into a hotel which is smack-bang in the middle of a city with a view of a brick wall and an industrial sized rubbish bin. There’ll obviously be none of that here, another reason it’s suitable for ‘retreats’.

In fact, the whole place feels pretty hidden and secluded from the rest of the world. You’ll drive through lots of towns and villages before arriving here and you’ll never see the place, as it’s among the trees and in a small valley.

This wasn’t my first time at Bollants Spa Hotel. I had already visited a couple of months ago when I was invited on the JRE Blogger’s trip through Germany. If you read my blog post on that event you’ll know that JRE is a fantastic culinary club, focused on supporting only the finest gourmet restaurants around Germany and Europe. If you’re a lover of gourmet food or if you’re interested in trying it for the first time, you can look up JRE’s list of recommendations – it’s on this list that you’ll also find Bollants Spa Hotel’s Michelin Star restaurant: Jungborn. More on that meal later.

It’s a beautiful day and autumn is beginning to show.

Amazingly for Germany’s weather, the sun was out in full force when we arrived. I took the opportunity to jump out and snap some photos for this blog post before going into device-detox mode. Bollants Spa Hotel has a sign about using devices while staying there. All devices must be on silent mode or off completely. I love that concept. As someone who is permanently GLUED to her phone (tsk tsk…) I cannot tell you how nice it was to spend two full days just relaxing. How lazy of me to admit this… but it’s true…. I tried to read on about four occasions and kept falling asleep. I must’ve needed it.

The Spa:

I could weep when I recall the massage experience. I think I’d also happily donate my left arm to get back onto that slippery massage table again. ‘Slippery?’ you may ask. That’s correct. Saskia, one of the massage therapists there, was able to transform me from a dry and highly strung individual to a slippery and relaxed mortal who could’ve died when she said ‘alright Mrs Escott-Kenny, I’m afraid that’s the end now.’ Let me explain.

You’ll walk into the massage room and will be asked to remove your clothes. Yes fellow English speakers, that’s correct. In the land of Deutsch, they are cool with nudity and not bashful or prudish like we are. This is something that after seven years of life here, I’ve had to slowly adjust to. In Germany you’ll receive nothing more than a shrug at best and a grimace at worst when you display your level of discomfort with nudity. They just don’t get it – and why should they? We’re all born that way after all. Anyway, I digress.

Saskia kindly held up a white towel while I removed my Klamotten. She asked me to lay face down on the massage table. This is where the story gets interesting. It was not a regular table. It was covered in a plastic layer which was then covered in aromatherapy oil. (My favourite: lavender) As I got onto the table, I realised it was going to be a very oily and slippery massage and to my delight, the table was heated. You seriously cannot imagine how relaxing that kind of a massage is. Ask me how long it went for and I’ll probably estimate ‘a couple of light years’. I’m pretty sure young Saska whisked me into a world of delight far, far away from Deutschland.

There are many outdoor pools and spas. Some are ‘textilfrei’ as they say. Again, if you have an issue with that, I’d recommend getting over it before coming here. There IS something liberating about Germany’s FKK culture. For those stick-in-the-muds, you will still find plenty of space at Bollants Spa Hotel where you can wear clothing, don’t worry. Or, if you’d prefer, you can use their coloured bathrobes available when you check in. It’s quite nice to roam about the property in those and your slippers.

Something which struck me about this property is that they’ve spent a lot of time (and obviously money) into creating lots of relaxation spaces for guests. I think I counted about 4 or 5 differently furnished reading zones. There’s everything in there to make sure it’s lovely for you – from pillows to blankets, to fresh fruit and filtered water, tea and even nuts and snacks.

(Speaking of snacks – there was an interesting concept on the third floor of the main building. It was called the ‘trust bar’. You could take what you wanted but you had to make a note of it and pay for it at check out.)

The property is huge so you won’t need to bump into too many people.

It looks a bit like a cute little toy village here!

The middle of the property has a lot of free space to grab some sun. I especially loved the swinging chairs (see below). I tried my very best to read there but as the chairs move back and forth, it almost took me back to the feeling of being a tiny baby, getting rocked to sleep.

The Villa:

I believe Bollants has three restaurants on site. The Villa is pictured below and this will be where you eat your included buffet breakfast and where you can also have dinner included too.

We ate dinner here on the first night and it was divine. There was a really fine selection of salads, cheeses, spreads and soups at the buffet and we both ordered a main meal too. Keep scrolling though, as the food is about to get very interesting.

Restaurant Jungborn: A Michelin Star

Those who know me, would be aware that I’m a self-labelled foodie. I adore high quality, interesting and well designed food. For that reason, I often like having a gourmet degustation from time to time. Everything about Jungborn was top notch, especially the staff members. We had the absolute pleasure of being served by two young but delightfully competent Bollants representatives. The sommelier knew absolutely everything about the wine he was serving and the young girl was so quick to attend to our table – she knew we needed something before we did. My only regret is that I didn’t note down their names!

The degustation works like this: you pay 79 euros per person for a five course meal and you can choose to do a wine pairing with each course for 56 euros per person. Additionally, the waiter will bring you some ‘greetings from the kitchen’ which is often quite common with these kinds of restaurants. If you’re yet to try Michelin Star food/gourmet food what you can expect is a taste sensation. This is food that you would likely never be able to replicate at home – all the more reason to go out and try it I say. Often the combinations of ingredients may sound odd but put full trust in the chef – he/she knows what will surprise you.

Have a look at our full degustation below. The ingredients are in the photo captions. If you’d like to enlarge the photo, just click the image.

I’d like to thank Bollants Spa Hotel endlessly for the amazing experience at their retreat. As you can see from the pictures, there’s no way that it was anything other than wonderful. Although I was invited to stay here, my readers know that I carefully select what I choose to write about and they can wholeheartedly trust my recommendations.

Bollants is a family run and owned business and I’m very sure they’d love to receive your support too: here is a link to their Facebook page.
