I’ve been wanting to write this post for many months now. Do you know what inspired me to act on it? I found out about yet *another* awesome cafe which had opened up in town, so I cycled over and met the owners. Not only were they lovely people but they were also passionate about coffee & Frankfurt’s brewing scene. So here I am – finally sitting down to tell you why Frankfurt’s actually got quite the caffeine scene and where to find the best coffee in Frankfurt.
Look for Frankfurt’s favourite coffee shops on Google and you’ll probably find some recommendations which are worthy and some which definitely are not. Today I’ll give you a list which you can 100% rely on for taste and ‘drama free’ coffee attitudes.
Best Coffee in Frankfurt
We all know the king of caffeine cool is Berlin – the ‘poor but sexy’ older sibling. Berlin is the guy at the party who is constantly asking others for drinks and rolling his own cigarettes. He brings cheap beer to the party and stays until the wee hours of the morning. Frankfurt is his wealthy younger brother who happens to be really good at investments. Berlin and his other siblings like to ‘diss’ Frankfurt, saying he’s just not cool and that he doesn’t have his own style.
As an Australian who has lived in good old FFM for the last 6 years, I can safely say that Frankfurt’s caffeine scene is pumpin’ and you’d best look no further than these cafes.

Without a doubt, Frankfurt’s friendliest coffee and some of the best coffee in Frankfurt. These guys always know what I’m having. (That’s a flat white.) The owner Sammy hails from Eritrea and has some of his friendly relatives working there too. He’s super supportive of the Frankfurt coffee scene and is genuinely a really down to earth guy. Attitude FREE zone. No wifi – just good coffee.

Owner Rachid El Ofairi hails from Morocco and knows his beans! I personally love his coffee so much that going there on a Sunday is the highlight of my day. I’ll never forget the first time I walked in, having heard on the down-low that his new cafe had opened up. I walked in and asked him if he did flat whites. He nearly jumped through the roof and gave me an enthusiastic ‘Ja voll!’. (That basically means ‘of course we do!’ in German.)
Aniis is about a 15 minute walk along the river away from Frankfurt’s CBD. Head to the brand spanking new ECB (European Central Bank) near Ostend, turn on your Google machine and go and find him. He’s a really lovely guy and his zone is also Kaptain Kenny approved attitude FREE.
Aniis wins extra best coffee in Frankfurt points for being open on weekends. As Frankfurt is predominantly a working city, it’s quite usual to find lots of good spots shut during the weekend but you can always be sure Aniis will be open for biz.
Back when I discovered Aniis, it was hard to find a good coffee in Frankfurt, let alone my beloved flat white. I love his space, the taste of his coffee and I always order his Aniis Teller: a plate of Moroccan influenced food.
Cafe 48 just opened up a few weeks ago and it’s a place I’d like to give some Kaptain Kenny air-time.
Cafe 48:
Mon / Tue / Thur / Fri: 08.00 – 18.00
S / S: 10.00 – 17.00
Rotlintstraße 48 – 60316 Frankfurt am Main
New owners Jonas Hammerstein & Hannah Staudt are not only passionate about Frankfurt’s brews but they are friendly too and were happy to have me snapping photos. For those who don’t speak German, they also speak English which is a nice bonus. The owner’s father sources the beans directly from the farmers.
The day I went they had quinoa chilli con carne on the menu but it was sold out. They also offer cakes, which given the location, is quite fitting as they took the space from a previous owner of a very famous patisserie who didn’t want to stay in business. Cafe 48 has a nice interior and some of the best coffee in Frankfurt. It’s definitely a cosy place to meet up with a friend & it’s a Kaptain Kenny approved attitude free zone. Only smiles will be given here!

These guys also win points for BEING OPEN ON A SUNDAY. They regularly change their food menu around but if you’re starting to feel hungry, they will have a few options for you. (Anything from wraps, to a garden salad, a plate of fresh waffles or a slice of bread with toppings.)
I’ve been coming to this cafe almost weekly for a year now and I’ve never seen it empty. People must be cottoning on to Frankfurt’s reliable coffee scene. The interior is cool and reminds me of some kind of renovated loft or factory. It’s also located very centrally in Frankfurt, close to town hall & the Roemer square, close to the river and happens to be a part of a lovely little square with some other bars, restaurants and cafes close-by. Best coffee in Frankfurt? Definitely up there.
If you follow my regular posts, you’ll know the last post I did was: VIF: A Frankfurt Insider’s Food Guide. This cafe is also relatively new but Louise the owner makes a mean cortado! Tucked away in Westend’s charming streets, tell her Phoebe sent you. I guarantee you’ll love it in there.

Other notable cafes in town with good coffee but which tend to come with a bit of ‘tude:
Thank you so much for reading this best coffee in Frankfurt guide. If I’ve missed any critical places in town, let me know by comment.
Also: I couldn’t possibly publish a ‘where to drink’ blogpost without mentioning my friend Dani at Souper & The Place To Be. Her two spots are tucked away in a backstreet in Frankfurt. Her mismatched furniture makes the vibe chilled and great for a summer drink. Here is me doing some shameless promo with her umbrellas.
