Germany’s Newest Attraction: Geierlay Bridge

Haengeseilbruecke Geierlay: if that rolls off the tongue for you, ten points! Welcome to a new German instalment of Kaptain Kenny – this time we’re showing you Germany’s newest tourist attraction…… the Geierlay Bridge, a hanging suspension bridge in Moersdorf.

I should point out that this was done as a day trip from Frankfurt. It’s about 1.5 hours to get there and you may spend 1-2 hours here depending on how you like to enjoy your trips.

I’m someone who is extremely active on Instagram and who uses it daily. Words cannot describe how useful it’s been for finding out about new travel spots, routes and secret escapes. Before booking a trip, I always check the hotel/area and destination out on Instagram first because I like to see other people’s real photos.

That’s how I came across the Geierlay Bridge. I follow a lot of the German Roamers on Instagram and through this amazing travel network, I first saw this bridge.

Actually, that long word, “Geierlay,” is German for ‘suspension bridge’ and that’s exactly what you’ll expect here. The adjacent town is fairly boring and not super attractive. After an uneventful 2KM walk along a concrete path which lines a pretty barren field of potatoes, you’ll eventually come to a huge valley where this suspension bridge will be quite literally ‘hanging’ to take your breath away. So what I’m saying is, park your car, do the boring walk and it will all be worth it!

I should point out however that there are two routes you can take to reach the Geierlay Bridge. The first route we took on the way there, was 500m or so less in length and took us along the potato field. No I didn’t take any photos because it wasn’t pretty. On the way back, we took the forest route and although it’s winter and the trees have no leaves at the moment, I still managed to have some fun. So my advice is to walk back through the forest.

 

The Geierlay Bridge was completed last year – that means it’s one of Germany’s newest attractions. Don’t ask me how on earth you build such a thing but the fact that it’s new, feels nice and safe to me. The hotly anticipated Geierlay rope bridge in Mörsdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, opened on 3 October 2015. The structure spans the forested valley of a Moselle tributary, deep in the heart of the Hunsrück mountains. Measuring 360 metres in length, Geierlay bridge is the longest rope bridge in Germany and offers adventurous visitors a unique experience 100 metres above the valley floor.
