Well howdy Kaptain Kenny readers,
It’s time to pack comfortable shoes – you are off to Cala Varques on the Balearic island of Mallorca.
This beach is absolutely worth the trip.
INSTRUCTIONS: You’ll have to drive about 1.5 hours from Palma to get here. The closest you can get to this beach by car is about a 45 minute walk. (Just look its location up on Google and park as close as you can.) You will literally have to park in what looks like an arid, desert style farm. There is a really rocky, wobbly road which leads to the opening of what looks like a national park which then takes you through to Cala Varques but I wouldn’t recommend it. Many cars burst their tyres and you aren’t supposed to park there anyway!
So after your treacherous hike through a Mallorca-esque desert, you will reach a weird iron gate which leads into a national park filled with all sorts of trees and more crazy rocks. Trust me – you now have to make your steep decline down, through the vegetation, as remote as it may seem. After a walk of around 45-60 minutes, you will start to hear civilisation. You’ve made it! Welcome to Cala Varques.
Don’t worry if you have forgotten to pack your lunch – there are some crazy hippies down there who run a pop-up mohito stand and another couple who sell sandwiches, Spanish style. (Basically baguette with oil, parma ham and tomato. Delish!) You can also buy fresh lemon and lime juices from them and a bag of chips if you get desperado.
The rest is up to you – as we dislike other humans while on holidays, we opted to escape the sandy rat-race and instead walked over endless rocky surfaces to get to a more secluded part of the area. (See photos.)

What a location!
It’s only possible to reach this beach by foot or boat.

I really wouldn’t recommend doing this walk without adequate shoes – I made that mistake!
Ahhh serenity now.
We jumped off that rock into the water, it was fantastic. Although it took a little coaxing from some 7 year old French kids to get me to jump….
If it hadn’t been windy, you would have seen right to the bottom.
A perfect day was spent here.
This spot is where you often see beautiful photos taken of boats which look like they are not even on water because it’s so clear. If it weren’t but for the wind!

This reminds me a little bit of The Burren in Ireland…. rocks, rocks, rocks!

April 11, 2016 at 8:06 amthis is stunning! it reminds me of beaches in norway… except the water looks bluer and of temperature to swim! ive never gotten down to mallorca but maybe one of these days ill get my butt there š

April 11, 2016 at 8:07 amWell you see it’s packed with tourists, especially when we went in August so my recommendation would be to go in off season or to put a lot of research into finding not-grossly-packed beaches

We went today and they now have a gate at the road entrance, so you have to park on the road or the āparking lotā 1/4 mile from the entrance for 2 euro. The mojito and sandwich stand is still there. Itās worth the effort, but people need to know what theyāre in for. Thanks!
